ASML makes lean compute
4/27/2008
WILTON — Bridgeport resident Mike Murphy, 46, knows possibly better than anyone what the changes at ASML over the last four years have meant to the company — those changes got him his job back. Murphy, clad in the white clean-room suit that makes everyone look like a work force of futuristic gnomes, said he'd been working for ASML and its predecessor companies for 16 years when he got laid off during the manufacturing meltdown in 2003. ASML has been in Wilton for 32 years, producing parts of the machinery that makes silicon chips for computers. It has been known as Silicon Valley Group and was also part of Perkin Elmer. ASML's parent company, based in Holland, reported net income of 145 million euros, or more than $226 million, for the first quarter of 2008.
