Ansonia Copper shrinking work force  
ANSONIA — Battered by soaring manufacturing costs and growing competition from abroad, Ansonia Copper & Brass Inc. — once among the region’s largest employers — announced Tuesday it will lay off most of its remaining work force at 75 Liberty St., eliminating 85 jobs and leaving 17 workers at the plant.

May 10 proclaimed as Student Innovators’ Day 
Connecticut Students to Exhibit, Present Innovative Projects at CT Innovation Expo Governor M. Jodi Rell has proclaimed May 10 as Connecticut Student Innovators’ Day in recognition of 1,000 Connecticut middle and high school students who have participated in year-long courses and programs that promote STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Students will be presenting information technology, e-commerce, and science team projects on May 10 at the 2008 Connecticut Innovation Exposition at the Connecticut Convention Center.

ASML makes lean compute 
WILTON — Bridgeport resident Mike Murphy, 46, knows possibly better than anyone what the changes at ASML over the last four years have meant to the company — those changes got him his job back. Murphy, clad in the white clean-room suit that makes everyone look like a work force of futuristic gnomes, said he'd been working for ASML and its predecessor companies for 16 years when he got laid off during the manufacturing meltdown in 2003. ASML has been in Wilton for 32 years, producing parts of the machinery that makes silicon chips for computers. It has been known as Silicon Valley Group and was also part of Perkin Elmer. ASML's parent company, based in Holland, reported net income of 145 million euros, or more than $226 million, for the first quarter of 2008.

Workforce training gets a boost 
Area manufacturers will soon have another resource to find qualified workers, with the development of a program at Norwalk Community College funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor. The state's community college system has received a $2.19 million grant designed to assist an estimated 750 students preparing for careers in industries such as precision manufacturing and aerospace components manufacturing through the Skills for Manufacturing and Related Technologies Initiative, or SMART.
